ALIYAH’S NEW CENTER FOR JEWISH LEARNING & LIVING LEADS THE WAY
WITH THEIR NEW RELIGIOUS SCHOOL MODEL
Jewish Learning & Living Classes, Small Ability-Based Hebrew Pods, Weekend
Experiences, Annual Retreats & Optional Enrichment Classes Offers the
Ultimate Recipe for Comprehensive, Customized Jewish Education and Flexibility
June 16, 2014 – Woodland Hills, CA – TempleAliyah, a Conservative Jewish synagogue with 1,000 member families, today
announced a new educational model and a new name for their religious education
program. The new educational model is designed to offer families with
children in kindergarten through 8th grades a comprehensive,
ability-based Jewish education experience, while allowing increased
customization and flexibility to meet the needs and demanding schedules of our
families. Effective immediately, with this new and innovative educational
model comes a new name that better reflects the school’s aims. The religious
school will now be referred to as Temple Aliyah’s Center for Jewish Learning
& Living (CJLL).
“Jewish identity and American society have
changed a great deal during the last century. The challenge of
Jewish education today is to find new relevancy and meaning in the Jewish
identity of the next generation,” said Rabbi Stewart Vogel, senior rabbi at
Temple Aliyah. “While the traditional Jewish values are as relevant as
ever, we need new vehicles and methods to transmit them to the changing
landscape of the American Jewish community. We are proud to be unveiling
a new program that takes into consideration the best innovations while meeting
the particular needs or our community.”
Temple Aliyah’s new model is built upon five proven educational experiences:
Learning & Living Classes:
All K-8 students attend the CJLL once a week for engaging,
experiential classes on Jewish holidays, lifecycle events, texts, stories,
current events, Israel, and Jewish culture and music. Classes are offered
Tuesdays or Wednesdays from 4:00 to 6:15 pm.
Hebrew Pods: Students
in grades 3-6 attend once a week to learn Hebrew in small, ability-based
“pods,” which run for 60 minutes. Pods are offered either at Temple Aliyah
or in neighborhood homes. All research shows that students learn languages
at different paces, so these small group classes are designed to teach
students Hebrew based on their current ability and aptitude rather than
just their age. Hebrew pods will be offered Mondays at 4:00 pm and 5:15
PM; Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 2:45 pm; Thursdays at 4:00 pm and 5:15 pm;
and Sunday mornings.
Experiences: Once a
month on a weekend day, students in grades 3-6 will attend a special Shabbat‑based
program or a Jewish community-based experience. These weekend
programs are designed to take the ideas taught in the classroom and bring
them to life.
Retreat: Once a year, all of our
students in grades 3-6 will participate in a fantastic weekend retreat at
Camp Ramah in Ojai, where they will experience a Shabbat weekend full of
fun, spirit and community building with their classmates and community
Jewish Enrichment Classes: Temple
Aliyah’s new program offers exciting new weekly classes in topics such as
conversational Hebrew, Torah trope, and Jewish cooking, to name a
few. These enrichment offerings are designed to give additional
options and flexibility to families looking for an even richer Judaic
learning experience. Enrichment classes will be offered Mondays and
Thursdays at 4:00 pm and 5:15 pm.
are so excited to offer families in the San Fernando Valley a more customized,
flexible and ability-based Jewish learning model.” said Rabbi Adam Schaffer,
Director of the Center for Jewish Learning & Living at Temple Aliyah.
“Everything about our new program is designed to make Jewish education
more effective and engaging for our students and their families.”

About Temple Aliyah:
Aliyah, founded in 1962, is a distinctly warm and friendly Conservative Jewish
congregation, located in the heart of the West San Fernando Valley in Woodland
Hills, California. We’re large enough to be a full-service congregation that
offers you and your family every opportunity to expand your Jewish horizons.
But we’re small enough for you to feel known and welcome. At Temple Aliyah,
your family is our most important concern. Whether yours is a traditional or
non-traditional household, a single parent home, a blended family, an
intermarried family, or have a family member with special needs, there are programs
