CJN Seeks Full-Time Staff Reporter

The Cleveland Jewish News has an immediate opening for a full-time staff reporter. The ideal candidate will have a nose for news, possess strong writing and editing skills, be digitally savvy, and have experience with photography and videography.

The Staff Reporter will cover breaking news, hard news, spot news and features for our award- winning weekly newspaper and post content to our award-winning website, cjn.org. Staff Reporter will also write short-form content and long-form feature stories for our award-winning magazines and produce content for our sister publication, the Columbus Jewish News.

Candidates who can develop sources, know how to work a beat and want to scoop the competition are encouraged to apply. The CJN competes with all other media to break stories and has won more than 250 awards in the last five years, including being named best non-daily newspaper in Ohio by the Cleveland Press Club and The Associated Press.

Candidates should have a minimum of two to three years of daily newspaper or other relevant experience, be self-starters, work well under pressure, ability to consistently meet assigned deadlines, ability to adapt to team environments and work independently, be a team player, have the ability to handle multiple assignments at one time and produce high-quality, accurate and error-free content. The CJN is an AP newsroom and familiarity with AP style in a digital first environment is desired. Experience writing and editing using Adobe Creative Cloud programs, including InCopy and InDesign, desired, but not required. Proficiency in all social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube preferred.

Recent college graduates who have demonstrated the above requirements through coursework and/or internships will be considered. This position will require some evening and Sunday assignments.

Mid-Atlantic Media, a fast-growing publisher of niche community newspapers, magazines and industry-specific titles, is seeking an editor to lead its award-winning, 134-year-old Philadelphia Jewish Exponent.

We are looking for a leader who will commit to involvement in the fabric of the Philadelphia Jewish community; establish relationships and meet regularly with Jewish communal leaders and readers; and help elevate the publication’s visibility, awareness and journalistic quality.

The editor candidate will have the knowledge and ability to understand what readers want, deliver it and see positive results through reader engagement. Our news-delivery commitment is focused on a “digital 1st” content approach, followed by the delivery of weekly print product.

The position entails the editing of copious amounts of copy while serving as a mentor to develop up-and-coming journalistic talent. The editor will be required to juggle multiple projects, including specific focus on the enhancement of readers’ online experience. Occasional travel, weeknights and weekends will be expected. A meaningful Jewish IQ and familiarity with the Jewish community are required.

This is a high-energy position and comes with the opportunity to shape how tens of thousands of readers across a major metro area region receive and digest news and features. This is NOT a remote work position. The editor opportunity is in Philadelphia with an established office and related staff positions, including dedicated reporters.

Qualifications:

• Must have strong familiarity with Jewish community

• Significant community news experience is a plus

• An ability to edit quickly and accurately in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment

• Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to manage and motivate a team

• Digital/Technical aptitude, including proficiency with Wordpress, digital photography, email content delivery and social media.

• Ability and willingness to wear many hats, from high-level editorial strategy down to shoe-leather journalism and in-person community engagement

Responsibilities:

Community builder: Help execute on company mission to use the vehicle of a community publication to enhance and build a vibrant and informed Jewish community in the greater Philadelphia area.

• Assignment editor – Help writers uncover local scoops, select stories for coverage, create a rundown and communicate with officials, sources and readers. Monitor email and social media for story ideas and trends.

• Copy editor – Regularly check and correct reporters’ copy for errors and style.

• Team leader – Set high editorial standards and motivate the teams to produce compelling, accurate community and national journalism that engages readers. When needed, the editor will lead by example, reporting stories and assisting with breaking news coverage.

• Editorial strategist – Engage with the community and help spread the word about our sites and our journalism. Work closely with the publisher to plan and execute further growth, and assist with development and editing of company-wide editorial initiatives.

You are knowledgeable about, or at least conversant with, Jewish life and issues, including Israel. You are comfortable juggling a range of assignments, from breaking news to personality profiles to enterprise stories. You will work with an experienced team of writers and editors who are committed to first-rate journalism and to serving the Jewish community of the Greater San Francisco Bay Area.

J. has a storied history dating back to 1895. We have always been independent, and are a nonprofit. Our office is in downtown San Francisco, and we have a very collegial newsroom that we hope to return to soon.
